Poll: What's the most you would pay for a smartphone?

The smartphone market has blown up and you’ll find smartphones at a variety of prices. Flagships are generally more expensive, but the lower priced competitors often claim to offer more value for the money. How much would you be prepared to spend on a new device?

Some people just have to have the newest flagship from their favorite brand and they are ready to spend $700 or more to get their hands on one. Some folks, on the other hand, don’t expect too much from their smartphone and only want a simple device that allows them to send messages on WhatsApp and read emails, so their budget is smaller. Many users just want the best value for their hard-earned money.

We found that the price bracket ranges from $150 for some lower range models, to more than $1000 for some of the top-range models. Everyone has a set budget and adjusts their expectations of a device accordingly.

So, we have a question for you: how much are you prepared to spend on a smartphone?

I like premium design, so thats not always easy to get a premium design phone for an affordable price, but in any case my phone should be worth my money. But yes, who really needs a 800 € Phone, when a 400 € phone does the same? :) I use 3 phones, one is too expensive, but worth the price for business (Huawei Mate 9) the other one is my private favorite design gadget nubia Z11 and an Honor 5x, with the best price-ratio (159 €)

I use a phone to make calls, sygic routeplanner, SMS texting, Google something now and than, check email once a day and of course WhatsApp. I do not have/use Facebook because I am not a digital exhibitionist
Why would i need a flagship phone costing me like 700-900 euro.
Having the Samsung S5 plus kccat6 sm-g901f, it's camera does the job and for serious pictures and movies I use my canon Eos.
Oh well Samsung SAYS this model would be incompatible to nougat firmware, but that is BS. On XDA forum are two very well working Roms Android 7.x based for download wich are working quite well for a daily driver. So firmware upgrade is no problem any more.
Running with the mass of people who buy flagships because there is a new one coming out never was or will be something I will do just to show off having the latest model available.

My wife's Moto G4 is an excellent phone-- at £150 it is a quarter of the price of an S7 , and not that far away from being as good

@greg - this is a bit difficult to implement as the bulk of our audience is US based.

I paid only $500 for an entire i5 16GB laptop; I see no possible reason to pay more than $150 for a phone, nor would my budget and general tightfistedness permit it. Unless I win the lottery of course, then I might buy all sorts of insane things. :)

I'm not sold on spending $650 or more on a phone anymore. Spent that on phones three years ago for my wife and myself and don't see that we are using them to have paid that much. My wife uses hers as a phone (yup she actually makes and receives calls, novel concept cause so many young people don't use that feature), taking pictures and videos of our grandkids, texting, email and occasional web surfing. I do all of that but the web surfing for me is heavier and I use some social media, music, and YouTube, which still doesn't warrant that price tag. My daughter's both spent $750 (which they paid for) and use their phones mostly for texting, taking pictures, and social media which again doesn't warrant spending so much for, but hey they have a flagship status symbol.
So for me I'm really interested in the LG G6, but the price is what's stopping me, at least for now. Last year's flagship may make my list if the price gets down low enough. Just saying that's how I feel about it right now, unless I win lotto.

i used to give more, but right now i just don't see any reason to buy something that costs more than 400-450$.
last years flagships are now around that sum, and giving double as that doesn't bring much more... benchmark results doesn't play any roll to me, cameras are similar, battery life are same...now this baseless designes are tempting, but if G6 would cost 550...i could consider giving little premium over budget, but since it's not...S7, OP3t, HTC 10, Z5...and many more devices that now cost even under 400$, are good enough to say without any regrets that there is no point of giving more to something else.

if it's a current flagship I'd pay 50-70% its original rrp..
less for anything made by Samsung..
i care more about updated software, a flagships lifespan only lasts as long as the software and security updates..
which is unfortunate if you care more about using the most current version of android as opposed to the most current hardware..

What I would pay for a phone is depends on the features, durability and longevity of the device. I am not sold on fancy feature or a beautiful looking phone. I am sold on if it will take a licking and keep on ticking( sorry Timex ). Also it must have a removable battery and Micro SD. With a removable battery a phone can last indefinitely. I have an S3 that will be 5 years old this fall. It has been dropped, drowned, stepped on, and thrown. It is still going strong all thanks to a removable battery and fantastic plastic construction. The Otter box case has helped as well, I must give credit where it is due.

$299 sounds sane to me. With the hardware that can( we know, depends on mfg) be had for that, after I make it mine(rooting romming, etc..) I tweak enough to get it to a high midrange level.

I don't find flagships with their high price worthwhile anymore. Mostly now it's just gimmicks.

I bought two s7 edges. One for me and wife. They are both paid for! If I desire to up-grade to the s8plus we will see! But I'm very happy performance wise! So will see what's offered! I f I like it fine if not my phones can go another 2 years or so!
