OPPO Find X display: OLED with surprises behind every corner

The OPPO Find X offers a large, almost bezel-less display and does not come with a notch: a move that many people will appreciate. But how does the OLED panel perform in everyday use?

A good OLED without the notch

The Find X incorporates a 6.4-inch OLED panel in 19.5:9 format and a resolution of 1080x2340 pixels, which results in 401 ppi. The display occupies an impressive 93.8% of the front panel. Together with the Vivo NEX, this is one of the highest body-to-screen ratios.

One of the best body-to-screen ratios on the market

In both cases, the two brands, which are closely related to each other, have decided to get rid of the much-maligned notch. They’ve also trimmed the edges around the screen and proposed a retractable photographic compartment to leave space on the screen to optimize multimedia content.

The Find X offers a curved display on the sides, which makes it reminiscent of the Galaxy S line: the curves not only make the front panel less boring but also improve the ergonomics of the device. The Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protects the display.

Color representation

The FInd X’s display is pleasant and readable, even in sunlight when you’re wearing polarized glasses. Thanks to OLED technology, the contrasts are excellent and the colors are represented well, which you can see in the graphics below.

Yellow is the only color that isn’t covered perfectly, but the screen is more able to represent the shades of green. In any case, all sRGB and DCI-P3 color spaces are covered very well. One small detail: along the curved edges, the white is slightly light blue.

The brightness of the screen is good, even in automatic mode. So you won’t be disappointed by the Find X display when you’re viewing on kinds of content.

Features and customization

In the settings menu, you can adjust the color temperature to make it either cooler or warmer. There is also a feature called Video Display Enhancement that works with your local and some third-party video players and that makes your videos brighter. It doesn’t offer anything more, so don’t expect all the customization options offered by Samsung screens.

Fewer customization options than Samsung displays.

In the menu dedicated to the display, there’s also the Panoramic Light Effect item that can be customized in color (purple, blue, or orange) and in the activation (for calls to all or some contacts and for lock screen notifications). This feature is undoubtedly original and does its best in the dark by replacing the classic LED notifications on the top of the device with beautiful light effects around the display. That’s useful and impressive!

The curved edges offer dedicated functions. There’s only a few of them, but they’re efficient. Swipe down with two taps on the curved screen to jump to recently opened apps. Place your two hands along the edges at the same time and swipe your fingers in the opposite direction to enable the multi-window view (repeat the action to disable this action). I can assure you: it’s easier to say it than do it!

Among other display functions, there is also a sort of Always On Display (under the name Screen Clock) that shows missed calls, text messages and unread messages on the screen when it’s turned off.

OPPO has equipped the Find X with a good screen that makes a strong first impression. It’s not the same AMOLED integrated into the Samsung Galaxy flagships, but it does its job and proves to be a valid companion for daily use. Who knows if we'll see, as has been rumored, this display on the OnePlus 6T...

Stop curving the edge of the screen. It's a stupid idea.

I see the "industry" has glammed onto another word. Style, colorful, slim are old hat. Now screen to body ratio is the new buzz word. Personally, I'd prefer a slight bezel around the entire display, for gripping, and hopefully to stave off any damage if dropped. It's fun to watch Facebook, twitter, instagram & youtube to watch everyone talk the same way about notches & bezels. Sheeple...

The jack in the box pop up feature is a very cool innovation. But I do question the durability with dust, dirt, sand? No water resistance could also hurt it. I do like the design and colors. And without a FPS, this phone will be popping up quite a bit. Long term use is questionable?
