How to fix "Screen overlay detected" error

AndroidPIT screen overlay detected 1
© nextpit

If "screen overlay detected" has suddenly popped up on your smartphone's screen, you're in the right place. Here we'll explain why this message is appearing, and how to make it go away. Follow this step-by-step guide to handle it the right way.

Jump to:

Error message “Screen overlay detected”: the cause

  • The problem: Android suddenly warns you that a screen overlay has been detected.
  • The reason: This message appears when you’re running a floating app, and then start a newly installed one, which requests access rights. Common floating apps include the chat heads of Facebook Messenger that can appear floating above other apps.
  • Affected Smartphones: Users across the internet have reported experiencing this problem on Samsung and Motorola smartphones, among others. AndroidPIT managed to replicate the behavior on a Vodafone and a Samsung smartphone.
  • Problem apps: We replicated the problem using Drupe, but ES File Explorer, CleanMaster, Lux and Twilight have all been blamed for the problem.
  • The technical background: As a security measure, apps ask for permission to use certain parts of your phone (internal storage, camera, etc.). In theory, a display overlay can interfere with the dialogue requesting permission, so you need to disable the feature to interact with the dialogue.

The solution: a step-by-step fix

Step one: "Screen overlay detected" fix

Find out what apps have permission to draw over the screen. On a non-Samsung smartphone, follow these steps:

  • Open the Settings
  • Tap the magnifying glass at the top right
  • Enter the search term “draw”
  • Tap Draw over other apps
  • Alternative route: Apps> [gear icon]> Draw over other apps

For Samsung users:

  • Open the Settings
  • Then Applications > Application manager
  • Press on More > Apps that can appear on top

Step two: check app permissions

You will find yourself in front of a list of apps that have permission to use floating buttons or other screen overlays. Now you need to identify the problem app and temporarily deny it permission to draw over the screen. Here are some pointers on how to identify the app that’s causing the trouble:

  • Do you see an app bubble on your screen? If so, this app is almost certainly the cause. Either you hide the app bubble or disable the app in the list.
  • Do you have an app installed that changes the colors on the display or adjusts the brightness?
  • Reportedly, Clean Master can be a trouble maker. If you see Clean Master in the list, disable it.
  • If there’s no obvious cause, disable everything.

Step three: re-try the app

Now you can try launching the app again, and it should request permissions without the “Display overlay detected” error getting in the way.

For Samsung users: We have also received a report that suggests the one-handed keyboard setting could be the root cause. Deactivate it by going to Settings> Advanced features > One-handed operation.

Step four: reactivate screen overlays

In order for the app(s) that you have disabled in step two to work again, you need to re-enable its overlay permissions. If you turned off all apps, it might be worth considering only reactivating only the apps that you actually use.

Step five: use safe mode

If the above steps don't work, there's an additional step you can take to try and fix the issue. This requires you to use the "safe mode" Android feature to manage the app permissions.

This method requires you to remember the app you’re having these issues with. (e.g., if it’s WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger).

  • First, press the power button of your phone.
  • Press and hold the Power Off option on the pop up prompt.
  • After holding it for a few seconds, another prompt pops up, asking you to enable Safe Mode.
  • Choose OK, the device will reboot in Safe Mode.
  • Now, when your phone has turned on, go to Settings, and then to Apps.
  • Here, scroll down and find the app that suffered from the screen overlay problem, select it.
  • On the app page, select Permissions.
  • On the Permissions page, enable all the permissions the app was asking previously.
  • After this is done, reboot the phone.

It's a rather inelegant workaround, but it's the best we have until Google makes the necessary changes to prevent app overlays from interfering with permission dialogues. Newer versions of Android don't appear to suffer significantly from this problem, and it seems to be mainly reported by users of Android Marshmallow.

App-based solutions

There are a couple of apps that exist to address this issue. Because it involves downloading additional software and displaying ads, we still recommend to first try the manual solution detailed above. Still, if it does not work, it could be worth giving these apps a try.

Install Button Unlocker

There's an app called Install Button Unlocker that unlocks the install button caused by the screen overlay error.

${app-jp.sfapps.installbuttonunlocker}

When you activate this app, you’ll be asked to allow it access and permission to draw over other apps which is required for it to override issues caused by other apps. Once the Install Button Unlocker is activated, re-try the activities that were previously affected by the overlay error. If it's working correctly, the error should no longer occur.

Alert Window Checker

Then there's Alert Window Checker, which checks if any app is using screen overlay permission.

When you activate it, Alert Window Checker displays a menu of the apps and whether they are using the overlay permission. If they are, you can select that app and then either force close it or uninstall it, depending on whether you want to use the app regularly.

A screen overlay is a part of an app that displays over other apps, such as the chat heads in Facebook Messenger.
    Go to the Home screen.
    Choose Settings.
    Scroll down.
    Choose the options symbol.
    Choose Special access.
    Choose Appear on top.
To turn off screen overlay, turn off permissions for all apps.

I tried every solution I could find on the internet. Nothing worked except a factory reset. Then I discovered that the problem was being caused by having "Select to Speak" active. Duh! (I often turn it on because of my poor vision.)
PS: This app does not appear in the "Apps that can appear on top" list, even when system apps are being displayed.

Rarely got the message, and then managed to find the way to the permissions issue. A headscratcher last year was sudden refusal to install APKs, the install screen would show but the button wouldn't function. Turned out the culprit was a blue light reduction app, that apparently overlays some internal controls whenever it's on. Disable it in the notification area, and the device returns to normal. Not sure how many other functions are affected by these things.

its a bug not a feature, and a confusingly worded one at that. yes I do have overlay apps but I want/need them and I shouldn't be forced to disable them just to grant a permission to another app. At most this could be a warning: android temporarily had to disable the following overlays in order to change the permission. Why on earth doesn't this stupid dialog name the problematic apps anyway? Frustrating users which such anoying messages will likely make them disable security features like this and thus make them less secure overall.
I have now installed "install button unlocker" and it works like a charm, despite its misleading name. Thank you androidpit for the suggestion.

I do not have ES File Explorer and have this issue. It has taken my Android experience from good to bad. Really this is kind of embarrassing for Android to let a major recurring annoyance like this slip by. So many times I need to do a simple task like open an app or attach a file and "screen overlay detected" pops up, I enter the settings and its not even turned on for that app. Trash.

Got the same problem on a Samsung j7. Switched off ALL "apps that can appear on top", done the one-handed keyboard setting, even tried "safe mode" as some youtube vids suggest (though safe mode seems to prevent some apps appearing). Either this is a virus, or there are hidden apps running in the background that cause the problem. This seems so fundamental to Android 6, surely there is a more comprehensive fix needed.

If you're still having issues even with disabling apps, you may be able to bypass the problem by giving the application the necessary permissions yourself.

I have an LGG3 so the wording or availability may differ for others, but I went to Settings > Applications > Configure Apps (from menu dropdown) > App permissions

There I saw a list of permissions (Calendar, Camera, Contacts, Microphone, Phone, SMS, etc). I clicked on the permissions the app I wanted to install couldn't get because of the overlay problem, then enabled the permissions for that app from there.

I'd disabled everything and rebooted my phone twice and couldn't get rid of the overlay detected error, then started digging through my settings until I found this, and it worked.

Then I realised that I had a "floating app" on the screen called " floating dock" which is a shortcut for a number of functions. I disabled this by going to settings, smart assistance and selecting floating dock off. My what's app then worked fine - I wasn't able to download any photos with it but now it is ok, after selecting on for storage in whats app.

In Moto g3 mobile with Android 6.0.1,
When you open an App if you face the "Screen Overlay Detected" Error pop up.
    First switch off the mobile.
Then Press the power button ON which is on the side of the mobile, then press and hold the volume control down bottom till the mobile Desktop screen is shown to boot in the safe mode.
Go to settings-> Apps -> Select the App which you had faced the above error popup.
Click on "Permissions" then grant the permissions for the listed items like "Camera","Contacts",etc...
Then swich off the mobile, then Switch ON normally(DONT press and hold the volume down button),
Open the app then you wont see the error.
    It works 100%..

I did this, step by step with want is said here and other places, and yet, it is still telling me to turn off the screen overlay. HTC One M8. Recent apps, Transformers, Arrow, Navy Federal, Youtube Studio, Hellofresh, SiriusXM. Error was discovered while trying to use Youtube Studio app. I'll go and uninstall that to see if it is the fault. (moments later) I have restarted the phone and the error went away. However, reading further in the comments while waiting for the phone to reboot, turning off all the overlay permissions REQUIRES A RESTART of the phone. So.... either one of these fixed my phone. It works now.

At Google Play, download...'Alert Window Checker'. This app will tell you which apps are currently using an OVERLAY and at least one of them will be your culprit. Once you find out which one it is, temporarily disable 'Screen Overlay' for that app and go make your permission changes etc. It's not labeled 'Screen Overlay' on my S7.

If your not sure how to get to the right place, this page can help:

In my case, what was causing the problem was Google Photos, which had been updated this afternoon. Once I went to the PlayStore and realized it had been updated, clicked on "Uninstall" and my problem was instantly solved. Nothing else worked, not even disabling "Permit draw over other apps" for every single app did the trick. Only solution was uninstalling Google Photos.

If you do not want to waste time finding out which floating app causes the displaying of the "Screen Overlay Detected" dialogue in order to temporarily disable the floating app to draw over other apps and then have to re-enable the overlay permission of the floating app after you let Android grants the required permissions of your newly installed app by selecting "ALLOW" in the permission dialogue, or the annoying "Screen Overlay Detected" dialogue still pops up every time you select "ALLOW" in the permission dialogue after you confirm all floating apps overlay permission have been disabled(this happens to my phones sometimes when I tested my app), all you need to do is to grant the required permission of your newly installed app yourself directly using the Settings app. The steps are:
    1. Open Settings App
    2. Tap on "Apps" to open the Apps page
    3. Scroll down the list of installed apps to find your newly installed app and tap on it to open the App Info page of the newly installed app. You would see "No permissions granted" under Permissions
    4. Tap on "Permission" to open the App permissions page of the newly installed app, tap on all the switches to grant all required permissions to the newly installed app.
    5. Return to your installed app, if the "Screen Overlay Detected" dialogue is still displayed, tap elsewhere (not on the dialogue) on your app screen and the dialogue would disappear, if the permission dialogue is displayed, just select "ALLOW" and it would disappear.

I was trying to free up space. I reset the FB app. And as such the permissions were reset too. When that happened, I had also setup OneNote, which comes with a new feature of OneNote Badge. Well that was an error in itself. SO I tried disabling and enabling App Permission for FB still the same. SO I disabled the OneNOte Badge App and it was grand. So I looked the issue up and it's actually a known error. So will have to submit an error to Microsoft as I really wanna use that feature. But the article did help in terms of Identification.

My son has a Moto X and turning off screen overlay for all applications did not work. Then we removed an app called DU battery saver and that fixed it. It's likely that app or another causing the problem.

I just bought a new Moto X and it's not 30 days quite yet. My Bluetooth keeps changing from the audio not being checked, only way to fix is shut down. That take 3 min. each time. Now I have this issue. I'm researching phones to buy and think I'm gonna send this back. So frustrated.

From reading all of these posts, I figured that one or more of my installed Apps was causing the problem, and none of the Apps suggested was the bad one. So, I just started uninstalling 3 or more Apps at a time and restarting my phone (suggestion from one of the posts) . Not sure which one did the trick, but it's fixed now!

Now i can't install a new app and get it to run without being told to turn it off.
I also can't use some current apps as well.

I've shut off permissions for all the apps listed including system ones.

No help. Same message pops up

Even went into safe mode and tried.

Uhm, I don't know if this would help but when you're on "draw over apps" the top right corner where the settings are (three vertical dots) it might say "show system" that would mean your system is hidden so therefore you didn't disable all apps, so show your system , and follow the steps given.

FIXED: All of this is fine, but when it did not work, I found the solution. Sure, I turned of all of the "draw over other apps" permissions, and still no joy. There were no Facebook bubbles. So I looked at the drop down list of notifications, and there was one or two that never disappeared. So I cleared all that I could by swiping, and I tapped the ones that would not move, and I get into their settings, and I turned them off, or turned off their permissions. And bingo, problem solved. My phone is a Motorola Moto G3 Android.

Yes, factory reset is the best thing you can do. Once done, if problem still persist find this one app that is causing the "screen overlay" message to pop up. Mine is the Easy Touch app. Uninstalled it, then phone is working properly now.

I had the same issue even after disabling all the apps' settings.
I uninstalled ES file explorer and the issue got resolved.
Try to remember any app that pops every time you do something like clicking a pic or something (mine was ES file explorer).
Disable/uninstall the app and then try again.

So many causes.. Would those saying "that fixed it" pls say the poster's name they refer to.
For me I installed 'Alert Window Checker' which showed apps using screen overlay, but I didn't want to delete them. I then installed 'Install Button Unlocker' (also at play store). I turned Install Button Unlocker on at the top of its screen (switch turns red) then the much hated "Screen Overlay Detected" stopped appearing in other apps. Nothing else worked for my S7.

Hi, for my Samsung Galaxy J7 Prime, I first activated to "safe mode". Activating on safe mode may vary on diff kinds of Phones so just google it, just like I did. :)
After activating to safe mode, I went to "Settings>Applications>Applications Manager". You will see all the applications installed in your phone, and will be able to disable and unable buttons on the permissions tab because you're on safe mode. You can see the permissions tab after clicking the application i.e FB Messenger. When you're done in the permissions, you may now restart your phone and things will work out smoothly. It did to mine! :)

SOLUTION: At least this worked for me. Just close all the apps and then retry the permission change that triggered the overlay error. When I say "close all the apps" -- on my S7, i have that "close all" option whenever I hit the "recents" button to the left of the home key. Bingo.

Okay. I've had about enough. My phone doesn't show the apps that are causing the problem. It'll show any other apps, system apps included, but never the app causing the problem. I've enabled permission, dissabked, rest all permissions, and even factory reset my phone. I've looked everywhere but I haven't been able to find someone with my problem.

I can'tcan't go to settings, and I can't fix it by disabling it because it doesn't even show me the app as an option too. Quite frankly I'm pissed; because this artical is the closest I got to an answer.

Just install Alert Window Checker from the Play Store, run it and you show you which apps are running the screen overlay feature. Stop one by one and try to reproduce the error over and over until you find the faulty app, then you may uninstall it. In my case it was a hotspot app. You're welcome 😉

Click on Permissions (it says 'No permissions allowed'). Opens App Permissions screen; all are turned off. Try to turn on Location and get 'Screen Overlay detected' So click 'Open Settings' and the App in question is not there... ARGH!!! I am using a Samsung Galaxy A3.

Are you the author of the app in question? If you are, I have no idea if its been solved only because i would have to buy the app again and run it. I was told that I could only get one refund on an app in question. is there any other way of checking out your comments? Thank you

Thanks, but I see your work around mainly consists of a phone. My problem is with a tablet Nexus7-13. Aside from that I followed your steps the best way I can and got as far as draw over other apps. Could you define what a Bubble looks like, or am I being stupid? Shape of a Balloon? Anyhow, I do not have on my system any of those apps you mentioned that may be the cause of the overlay problem. ..also, I cannot repeat the process with the same app, cause I paid for it and was told that I had an hour to get a refund and only can get one refund...so I doubt if I am going to d/l it again. Is there any other way to check to see if i still have the overlay problem?

follow this 2 step to solve the screen overlay problem:
    Step 1
Use the Safe Mode feature on your Samsung Galaxy S7 to access the operating system with default software. Use Safe Mode if you have installed something on your S7 that no longer allows the device to start successfully. Just use these steps.
    Turn On Safe Mode
    1. Power the phone off.
    2. Once the phone is off and all lights are emitting, press and hold the “Power” button to turn the S7 back on.
    3. When the Galaxy logo appears on the screen, press and hold the “Volume Down” button.
    4. Continue to hold the “Volume Down” button until the phone completely boots. You will see the words “Safe Mode” appear in the lower left corner of the screen if you performed the steps properly.

    Step 2
Now go to <Settings>, <Application>,< Application manager>,<tap on individual app>,<permission>, <App requesting right of access>, enable / disable permissions. Power off and restart the phone.

While in Safe Mode, you may not be able to use certain features or applications. The device is in a “bare bones” state where just the essential software is loaded. This allows you to get into the device quickly, enable or disable whatever you need to, then restart.

    Turn Off Safe Mode
To turn off Safe Mode, powering down, then back on should do the trick. Be sure to power completely down.
Some Galaxy S7 models may require you to press and hold the “Volume Down” button during start up in the same manner as enabling it to exit Safe Mode.
If you continuously start in Safe Mode and cannot get out of it, a malfunctioning app may be causing the problem. You may have to uninstall apps until you track down the one that is causing the problem.
This post applies to the SM-G930F and SM-G935F (Edge) Models of the Samsung Galaxy S7 smartphone.

You can forgot other method eg. delete app like DU Battery saver etc etc. i already did it on my S7 it work no more screen overlay problem. :)

This method the disadvantage is when you install a new app and got the screen overlay problem you have to redo the whole process again start from step 1.

I had this problem just the last few days and it drove me mad, because I had it a few moths ago also. After a bit of searching and pondering I came up with the screen overlay permitted for DU Battery Saver. In this app there is a feature called DU Swipe. It is a screen overlay that gives you the possibility to set a couple of shortcuts on your screen that you can reach by swiping from a corner of the screen. I turned it off...........problem gone.

So DU Battery Saver..................turn off the feature: DU Swipe. (Find it in the menu of DU Battery Saver)

Hey folks ... I am using Honor 5x ... I was going crazy ... absolutely mad about this screen overlay madness ... I checked videos and also read long documents online nothing helped. I was about to reset my phone but then I realized that I had activated a floating dock on my screen ( Just like the small circle you have on the iPhone screen which opens up on touch and gives you short cut options of going back to home screen) I switched it off and bingo my problem was solved. I ended up deleting all my apps and games in my struggle to fix the problem, but it was a very small setting that had to be turned off. So bottom line, just sit back and think, observe your phone and find out which floating app is sitting on your screen permanently or which was the app that was installed right before the issue started and then either turn off that app or uninstall it and it issue should be fixed. No need of following any lengthy troubleshooting steps. It's simple folks (overlay) find the culprit software that's overlaying on ur phone screen and following you on every screen of your phone. I hope this help. If it does not, then write to me on feroziswanted@gmail.com... I am no developer but might be able to help!! Cheers, Ferokzz

I was in the midst of losing my cool about this issue when it dawned on me that I had enabled touch wiz on my phone and that annoying little dude in a box always was popping up on the exact spot I needed to do something and he floats around so that was the only floating chat head that I could recall recently which could have possibly been the culprit since I had already factory reset and tried the tedious chore of disabling each app. So far I think its the reason I had the fliping screen overlay detection each and every single solitary function I was performing do will see so far so good and if it isn't the issue you will see me on the nightly news and the headline will rwas "LOCAL WOMAN ARRESTED FOR BLOWING UP BRSND NEW PHONE AFTER SHE WENT CRAZY FROM SCREEN OVERLAY MESSAGES THAT WOULDNT STOP POPPING UP ON HER BRAND NEW EXPENSIVE LG ANDROID PHONE" ....wish me luck

As noted this is rather inelegant. An easier way is to boot up in safe mode and set the permissions for the app that is asking for access rights, and then reboot in normal mode. To boot into safe mode press and hold power button. Press and hold the <power off>dialogue, which appears, for a couple of seconds seconds. The dialogue <Reboot to safe mode> appears. Say OK and to boot into safe mode. Your home screen will display "Safe Mode" at the bottom. Now go to <Settings>, <Apps>, <App requesting right of access>, enable / disable permissions. Power off and restart the phone.

The problem may be because of a third party app not mentioned above. Try to off the permission to draw over other apps for all third party apps, and then try to on it for each one, checking whether it is allowing to change permission without screen overlay dialog box. U will surely find it in this manner, the app causing trouble. Hoping this will help, I too am using moto g4plus

On the Galaxy A3, go to "settings", scroll all the way down to "Application manager" (third from the bottom).
Click on the three dots in the top right-hand corner, then select "Apps that can appear on top".
I haven't found the exact app which is causing me problems, so I switch all of them off, go back and set the permissions on the new app, then return to settings and switch back on overlays for the apps which i need.
Following an update, my phone is treating most of my apps as new ones so i have done this many times.!!
      Hope this helps.!

Thinking myself smart I spent the better part of a day, one by one checking each app's permissions in settings app, and preemptively granting permissions. After 2 full days of i'm-going-to-throw-the-phone-out-the-window frustration, finally a solution!

I had tried all the million other solutions suggested and each worked for 1 app setting and then the screen overlay ghost returned. What made matters worse was that in my attempts to fix the overlay problem, I reset the app preferences. This very politely removed all previously granted app permissions - which I then couldn't reset because of the screen overlay problem.

Anyway, this works perfectly. The ads may get on my nerves soon but it's worth it until normal phone operations are resumed.

      Thanks Allen!!

This is NOT a solution! A solution works for everyone and this for some people has been a time waster. If some things work for some people and not others it has to be baked into the OS and it conflicts with certain apps. If it worked, great, but if you download another app and it doesn't does that mean it's fixed? No!

I don't understand why you need to dissallow all apps overlay permission and turn them on again EVERY TIME you want to change a permission. I explicitely gave those apps permissions to use overlay. So the OS should allow changing those settings while the permitted overlay is active!! It's ridiculous.

This is the worst thing yet on Android. Compounded with the new ask for permissions as needed by apps, means you don't know until you try to use an app's feature that you have to give it permission, then when you try to give this permission, you get a screen overlay error. OMG! Today I tried to save a picture in chrome, chrome needs storage permission....... So it's not newly downloaded apps, it's any app that has yet to ask for permission.

Except that this isn't a fix its a long and annoying process that has to be performed every time you install an app and than undone to make your overlay work again.

The actual FIX would be for the android system to automate this process by temporarily disabling all overlays AUTOMATICALLY while the permission dialogue is being displayed and than re enable them after permissions are granted.

The real error here is that this error exists at all and requires user interaction for a process that should be handled by the Android Operating system behind the scenes

Absolutely totally agree with you, Mike. This is ridiculous. I have the added problem that my back / home / recent apps buttons don't work on my Xperia Z2, so I have to use a third party app that "draws over" in order to access these key functions. If I can't use the third-party app, I have to restart my phone every time I want to use a different app!!!! The error effectively renders my $600 phone unusable. I've been a cheerleader for Android for ages, but this is a serious issue.

Completely agree as well. This is EXTREMELY ridiculous. This is not at all a solution. It seems like a really bad design flaw. Because I have apps that use the overlay, I have to do this for every single app I install? Seriously? In what way does this make sense?

It seems that this is more of "incompatibility" of an app to 6.0.1 OS. If the developer hasn't updated its app version to be compatible with 6.0.1 then you'll get this "screen overlay" message. And yes, CleanMaster is one of those apps.

Hello everyone. I have the same problem in my Sony Xperia z2 and I couldn't disable all apps overlay permission since in some of apps like phone pre-installed apps and system apps, I can't disable or enable this permission. The switch is gray and the "Screen overlay detected" error is almost there with all possible apps' overlay permission disabled. And in addition I should say that force stopping these apps haven't any effect on my problem disabling permission.

LG G5 (and previously G4) here and had problems with this, as well. So far every time I've had a problem resetting and then changing the settings has worked. I think force stopping whatever app would also work, but resetting is just easier.

For those of you who tried the above without luck, the system apps that have the permission are hidden on some (all?) phones. To access them, you have to click on "Show system" (or Show System apps or similar) from the menu in the "Draw over other apps" permission area. My guess would be the reason Samsung and Motorola are mostly seeing this is due to a system app that causes the problem, not a third party app.

Personally I have narrowed my problem down to a screen recorder, Facebook messenger, or a specialty photo app I have, all three which use pop up type things to work.

I had this problem with my daughter's phone. We both have a Samsung GS6 and the apps we use are pretty much the same. This problem just started when she tried to share a photo from Google+ to Instagram. All of the apps on her phone have been there for months. I could not find the offending app so after reading this I decided to uninstall CleanMaster. That fixed the problem. I am not sure why this surfaced on her phone today and has not caused a problem on my phone (yet). We have both had CleanMaster on our phones since January.

This worked for me. This is super annoying though. Literally ever new app I install that has permissions causes me to do this work around. What does't make sense is why would this just be happening to Samsung and Motorola devices only. Looks like this if it is a software issue would be causing this for all users,

I have read many comments and none that I read addressed or fixed the same problem on my Note 4 with Marsh. 6.01. Removing Facebook lead me to going to Developers and checking a box to show Layers (sorry for not giving the exact name, uninstalling Facebook with the option to re-install original Facebook app opened the box automatically). When I checked the box, the main screen popped up with transparent red areas showing screen overlays. Just a couple of days ago, after watching 50 great things about the net Note 7, I wanted to try a few of them on my Note 4. ******* I went to Settings, in the group Sound and Display, then One-handed operation, and turned on Reduce Screen Size and Side Key Panel. I turned them all OFF and my phone started working correctly again. Your problem may be different but when I turned on the option in Developers section for Overlays, it popped into the main screen menu and apps, and showed a little red patch for the screen overlay for the Side Key Panel which I had just turned back on a few days ago to try to make it useful again. Guess NOT. Unfortunately, I think I am going to have to go back to each app to turn on each permission individually, or turn all permissions on, or reinstall each app. :( Hope this helps you.

This happens to me every time I attempt to do something that isn't permitted in a specific app, but only does it while a Facebook chat head is active. Upon closing the chat head, I'm able to change the permissions freely for whatever app desires a change. This has happened very frequently as of late, but Facebook is what causes it on my Galaxy S6 Edge.

None of this specifically helped me on my Verizon LG G4. There is no option for turning the screen overlay off (for everything). I did not try turning every app off. However, the app that was doing this to me was TrustGo. I turned off all real-time scanning and it did not fix it. I turned off the screen overlay for it and it did not fix it. I uninstalled the app and it DID fix it! I was able to modify all my permissions which in my case was wanting to turn some off. I reinstalled the app and have had no issues. To test an easier solution, I simply FORCE STOPed the TrustGo app, then I was able to adjust permissions again. FYI There is no batterysaver stock on it, however, they want you to use one of theirs so it does show something like "+2h 21m could be extended >" so maybe that has something to do with it. Either way, problem solved! :D

Contacted my provider MetroPCS who "refreshed" the phone but this didn't help. Today I went to the MetroPCS store and the tech stated he's seen a lot of these problems lately. He disabled all the generic anti virus and cleaners and now the phone works without incident and no more error message. Tech advised that these generic cleaners and anti virus are actually planting viruses. Uninstall all the generic "fun to have" apps and just use the Smart Manager Samsung app to clean your phone.
