The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 originally came out of the box with the Jelly Bean Android operating system. Samsung offered software updates up to Android 5.0 Lollipop for the standard Galaxy Note 3, however Galaxy Note 3 NEO did receive a later iteration with Android 5.1.1, after which Samsung stopped offering system upgrades to all Note 3 devices. Luckily, it is still possible for you to get more recent versions like Android Marshmallow or Android Nougat on your Galaxy Note 3, though we must point out that these are through unofficial channels and therefore you choice to use them is at your own risk.

Android 7.0 Nougat on your Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Samsung stopped offering system upgrades after Android Lollipop but if you want to get Android Nougat on your Galaxy Note 3, there is a way! You can flash a custom ROM on your device - though this will void your warranty, so make sure this is definitely the route you want to take before diving in. XDA developers and Root Update offer some helpful tutorials on how to do this.

Android 6.0 Marshmallow on your Samsung Galaxy Note 3

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Android Marshmallow update is not available but as for the Android Nougat update, you can still get Marshmallow on your Galaxy Note 3 using a custom ROM. Have a look at Team Android or Neurogadget's tutorials for some help with this.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update

The only Samsung Galaxy Note 3 model to officially get this update is the Galaxy Note 3 NEO. The standard model's official support stopped at Android 5.0. However, you can still upgrade to 5.1.1 using a custom ROM. Have a look at Team Android's guide on how to do this.

The last Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Android 5.0 update

AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon and Sprint all offered the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 update to Android 5.0 Lollipop.

The update to Lollipop brought brought battery improvements, smart-lock functionality, lock-screen notifications, plus the new Material Design look and feel, making it the biggest update to hit the Note 3.

To check if you have it, go to the About phone page in your Settings menu and tap Software update to see if you can download the latest version.

What Android version are you running on your Galaxy Note 3 yet? If you have Lollipop, are you thinking about getting Marshmallow or Nougat? We'd love to read about your thoughts in the comments below.

As of October 2019, most encrypted and highly secure apps (banking tools, etc..)Will no longer work with any version older than 6.0. There are websites as to h how you can update to a marshmallow or nougat system. I've had my Note 3 for 6 years now, we have 4 others as well. To not be able to run everyday apps can be frustrating. Youtube has streams available to walk any one person through how to do the update. I did it on one and the battery issue disappeared. Runs like a brand new phone. I will be converting all of my Note 3s. It was a risk to try but well worth it. No longer having to worry that my texts aren't going through, calls aren't being completed do to incompatibility. Good luck.

I absolutely love it! The screen seems brighter, and the way my emails look is fantastic. What a difference. I followed the instructions under settings in the article because another friend on tmobike said she got her notice, but I didn't get mine. Probably because I had never updated my phone. I can't say enough about it. Every single new feature, I love. Thanks Samsung....and I'm a real person. I don't usually comment on anything. This upgrade is just so good.

In order to flash the Android 5.0 Lollipop OTA package on your device, you must have the base firmware with build number N900AUCUDNL1 (Android 4.4.4) on it. You can find out the firmware version of your Note 3 by going to Settings> About. In case your device has NC2, NJ5 or any other firmware, please install the NL1 firmware first.

      Download the firmware: N900AUCUDNL1 AT&T Note 3
Install the firmware using our detailed tutorial.

In case your device already has NL1 firmware, make sure it’s 100% stock. It simply means that your phone must not have root access to flash the OTA successfully.

Having taken care of the prerequisites mentioned above, just follow the steps given below:

      1. Download the Android Lollipop OTA package for AT&T Note 3: N900A_OC1_Stock(100%).zip

      2. Copy the OTA zip package on the external SD card of your Note 3.

      3. Enable USB Debugging on your device. This step has nothing to do with OTA flashing but it can be helpful in case anything goes wrong.

      4. Now turn off the phone and boot it into the stock recovery: hold the Volume Up + Home + Power keys simultaneously for a few seconds. As soon as you see the Samsung logo, release the Power button but keep Volume up and Home buttons pressed until you get into the Recovery Mode.

      5. Using the Volume keys, scroll to apply update from external storage option and press the Power button to select it.

      6. Navigate to N900A_OC1_Stock(100%).zip and select it.

      7. Confirm the installation and wait till the OTA is flashed.

      8. Finally, go back to the main menu in recovery and select reboot system now option.

Your AT&T Note 3 will reboot. Just wait for a few minutes till it boots up for use. You are now ready to enjoy the all new Android Lollipop on your device.

Nothing is wrong with the update. The screen is more sensitive and music sounds better with earphones.Colours should not be an issue unless you have childish preference and fantasy for colours.Mature minds place functionality above looks and feels. As regards the battery,I have not noticed any fast drain, maybe because I use an app called shut app.Samsung tried in rolling out the update. Why can't we be grateful for once? But if you are bent on getting your preferred colours, you may have to pay Samsung for a customized colour phone that would suit your whims and caprices.Thank you Samsung for making over 30 applications available in pen window as against 10 or so b4 the update,I can now run a lot of applications at the same time.

Do not update! You ll get note 4 multitasking features and they are horrible,it was so much better with note 3 primary multitasking;also you wont have that wonderful deep black bacground anymore, now its that stupid white that isnt good as black on amoled sreens.

Yes, i totally agree with you! Unfortunately, I've upgraded before i read any forums. I'm not happy with the upgrade 5, Note 3 'Original Version' offered 'WAY' better options than this version 5. I dont like the 'light coloured background', (downside) - the black was much better. I got used to the original version of Note 3, now there gone! Overall, i give the 'Big Thumbs Down' it doesn't suit the Note 3 users.

Every time there is an update for my phone I wait and read the reviews first. Some have been good, others like this one have been HORRIBLE!!!!!! I held off as long as I could to update my phone. Since the update my lock screen constantly gets white boxes over the numbers and letters so you cant even tell what they are. My camera gets locked in landscape mode when I did not even put it there. Both problems can only be solved by turning my phone off and then back on again. Or as the repair store told me that if it kept up I would have to do a factory reset and loose everything I have which is a last resort and I don't want to do. My phone has now also restarted several times on its own. My folders on my home screen are so small they are useless and I had to remove them and make my screen a mess instead of nice and organized like I had it before. And the battery????? I have to carry a charger with me so I don't get stuck with a dead one when I'm out and about. When I am at work I have to keep my phone on silent, and lately after any call I get I have to unlock my phone and put it back on silent because the ringer goes up on its own. NONE of this happened before the update. I want the old update back, it was much better.

Wouldn't it be great they provided free upgrades for two years, then offered optional updates for sale? Who'd buy Marshmallow for $25? $50? That way the user could decide for themselves wether or not to upgrade and the company could remain profitable either way. In fact, I bet they could even justify a lower purchase price if they make some money on the back end?

This update totally sucks! The bluetooth won't stay connected to anything. The widgets keep freezing and the only way to get them working again is to restart the phone. Worst of all the ring volume has got a mind of its own! It moves between max to silent without me touching anything! I use my phone for work and it's really bad when I can't hear clients ringing me or the bluetooth disconnects from the car mid conversation! This phone was the best I have ever had and this update has turned it next to useless overnight!

AT&T decided I didn't have a choice anymore and forced lollipop on me last night. my phone barely functions, the layout is horrendous, I have a lot of folders and the way they changed them drives me crazy, a good chunk of my old apps aren't supported anymore, my battery which used to last at least 24-36 hours now barely lasts 10, the Bluetooth and WiFi are terrible, my calls barely go thru, and after just getting off the phone with Samsung, there is still no talk of when an update might be released to fix these so called "glitches". glitches is the biggest understatement ever. the phone is horrible now. definitely makes me want to wait to get a new phone until well after lollipop is dead and gone. gonna downgrade back to jelly bean or kit kat tn, hopefully it actually works.

This update is by far the worst update I've accepted. The layout is terrible from the lock screen to messaging to the application folders. Its hard on the eyes, confusing , and just plain terrible looking. App icons like the one for "images" look like something I drew when I was two.

The thing that bothers me the most is the fact that ,on the lock screen, the pause, play and next/previous buttons are non existent. This makes listening to music more of a hastle than it should be.

I have one pro. When I mow the lawn with pants that don't have pockets I can't unintentionally pause my music. Big whoop.

I will commence the prayers for a reverse update button.

Verizon just pushed it out today. Could not decline it. It hosed my phone. If anyone can figure out a way around this do it. This update is dangerous.

Okay - finally got it working. This weird "update" made the phone more clunky. Used to be you could clear all notifications with one press of the screen. Now you have to touch each individual notification. And for some of them, touching the notification clears the notification but then opens the app associated with it. It's not your choice to simply be notified that you have an email or text, now you WILL read it. Don't you dare think you should be able to run your own life.

New one. It replaced my step counter that I downloaded as an add on with something called S Health, a Samsung app. It actually removed my old app (not Samsung) and put this new one in it's place. And it created an annoying icon on my screen that I am not allowed to get rid of. Also, it now has a "use the phone" swipe icon that you can't get rid of. Use the phone? What is this, 1952? The least useful thing about this device is the thing they choose to put front and center right in your face? This update is obviously not for the user. It must have some utility for Samsung and Verizon, probably more spyware, but it's made MY phone, the phone that I pay Verizon for and pay Verizon to use, harder to use.

Such pros and cons with this update to lollipop. I'm STILL having problems. I am on the Sprint network and woke up to the update roughly 2 weeks ago. Between how much space it used and all the changes, it was like a brand new phone. This update came through on the day of my son's birthday party and I had zero time to learn were everything was moved to. The color scheme is really upsetting. I on accident deactivated my Facebook account since the color of the link now blends in with the background coloring that can't be changed. It links up to my car radio yet I can't navigate thru my music library via my truck radio. I have to use my phone screen now. Big deal. I've lost music and pictures. I have also lost apps. It's difficult to use the Facebook Messenger app. I at first was not receiving those messages in real time. I did however shut the phone down and restarted it days later and that seemed to help. The pros. Seems the battery life is a bit better depending on how much I use it. It finally downloaded my phone list into my truck radio along with my received and missed calls. I like the changes to the camera. I am still adjusting to it and hope in time I learn to fully appreciate all the update has to offer.

I just received my update for my note 3 to lollipop. what I have noticed is my phone is becoming hot, battery life is used up quickly, the new colors are pastel and childish looking, the screen is more sensitive so while holding the phone to your face it opens other stuff, while on the phone and another call came in I put that person on hold and clicked over to the new caller and realized we were on a 3 way call...didn't even know I could do that. a lot of things are in different places or have been removed. or brains remember things by look and color and to have everything change and the colors too really made it difficult to use my phone quickly. So much has changed I feel like I got a new phone, and not in a good way. I would have liked a choice to have kept the colors the same as before. I use my phone for work and to wake up in the morning to find all these changes made for a difficult day of work. it's one thing to change a few things, but to change so much and make everything in new colors was to much. I'm 5 days in to this update and I'm not happy with it at all.

I agree. I've had my note3 almost 3 years & never updated it. My husband recommended I update it & it changed everything about the way my phone looked. I called Samsung thinking they could advise me on how to change it back- you can't & I'm not happy At. ALL.

Galaxy Note 3 android update is so glitchy and things randomly close and open or as your texting will just send texts without even finish what you wanted to say in the text. I have 2 of the same phones but they will not replace it because its not a phone defect in the phone but its the update. i do not want to pay retail for a new phone. (verizon 2 yr contract) Their are no new updates to fix all of the glitches yet? so what to do and when are they going to fix this??

    Please help.

Just installed the new update this morning. For some reason, my phone did not complete the update and is now malfunctioning because of it. I had to call Verizon and they are sending me a new phone. Apps close while using them, and just seems very glitchy. Not really impressed.

Got the lillipop update and I like it mostly. But it took away a lot of customization. Features. for instance the colors of main apps. The yellow for the text message app is so ugly and it won't let me change it. Also my calendar has to be this bright ugly green.
And I don't like the boxy folders for my apps. I liked the circles. Would be nice to get to choose for appearances. This primary color scheme looks ugly. But functionality is nice. Also why no purple action memo anymore. All the other colors no purple? Just my luck.

This update was garbage. Changed the whole interface of everything. It is killing my battery faster than any app running 24/7 Having to charge in the same day as it was fully charged is ludicrous. My wife's phone failed during her update and it has currupted the whole phone and now she has to do a full on factory reset at the store. All her recent pictures from a birthday are all gone and lost forever. This update is not worth it and I wish I could have my old phone back. I hate everything about it. You screwed me samsung and I didn't even get dinner before hand.

I am confident that this blog is right on point with information about the update since they are noting the correct "band number" for the update. Now where can I find specific information on accessing the items that have been updated such as my lock screen access is no longer under "device", it is now under "phone" and it had 5 screens, it now only has 2 and it appears that I can't even condense info that is on the 2 screens. I want to put the owner info on the same screen as the key pad or if I can't do that how do I change which lock screen should be the default screen? I would prefer that the owner info show up 1st, since I know which screen the key pad is on. Can anyone point me in the direction of how to access the changes that I should be able to access? Emoji enhancements, etc.?
