I advise you to use both free and paid ways in mobile app promotion. Before starting to spend money on getting traffic, take an eye-catching icon & informative promo screenshots on stores and optimize your keywords and create a short indexable description using free trial ASO tools.

Then make sure you’ve installed the SDK of a tracking system. A tracking system is a piece of code that will report the companies you’re going to work with by cost-per-install when the installs have been actually made. It’s a standard procedure to have the reporting set up, and basically every company on the market works with the popular tracking systems such as Appsflyer, Tune, Adjust, Kochava, etc.

You should know on market there are two types of traffic: incentive and non-incentive. Incentive traffic costs less but it means that users are actually incentivized to install your mobile app. For instance, they play a game and are asked to install your app in exchange for an exclusive feature being opened, or some gold, or else. If we speak of non-incentive traffic, it’s easy to understand it on the basis of Facebook ads. You see an advertisement, you can scroll through or you can stop by and make a decision to download based on the topic of that app or you just liked the ad banner. This means you were non-incentivized to download it, and such traffic is called non-incentive.

Knowing that and having installed the SDK, you can go to mobile ad platforms, ad networks or self-serve platforms who can help you with paid user acquisition. Choose those that work by the CPI payment model. CPI means you will pay only for installs, real users who have downloaded your app. You can spend even such a small sum as $100 to run a test ad campaign.

If you want to know how much it costs to promote an app in different countries, you can find Clickky's mobile CPI (Cost-per-install) indexes online here: clickky . biz / cpi / october / index . php
The most significant absolute indicator was discovered for Brazil (less than $0.1 for one install on iOS). The data below shows average Android and iOS CPI comparison for non-incentive ads in Brazil.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR A SUCCESSFUL APP LAUNCH

The main goal of the preparations is to have many downloads in a short period, right? Well, keep reading and we’ll help you do your “pre-app launch” homework well and make an entrance!

1. Create a landing page:
Whether you have built a website or not, create a landing page designed specially for the purpose of collecting leads. This page doesn’t have to be a “fancy one”, but it has to have a good CTA (call-to-action) button and grab your readers’ attention.

2. Make a Video:
Many app developers aren’t aware of the fact that Apple allows you to have a short video about the app. You should certainly take full advantage of it! Put in a great deal of effort and make a convincing video that can attract both investors and downloads.

3. Press Release:
A PR text has been a well-known promotion method for many years now. Guess what? It is still “working”. When it comes to traffic boost and downloads, nothing beats an article from a popular tech site! That said, make sure you knock on every door! Don’t be modest, believe in your app and send a pitch to various editors.

4. Be on Social Media!
Nowadays, being present on social media is of paramount importance. Don’t wait to launch the app to present it to readers (…and boost some posts) – create a presence for it before the launch date. Here are the most important social media platforms to be on and tips on how to make the most of them: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter.

5. Preapps:
Preapps might not be considered as a social media platform, but since it is a community of people interested in app ideas, discussions and suggestions, it is certainly a place to be! You can interact with people who are keen to test your app. Needless to say, being a part of this community poses a huge opportunity for you to easily build your email list by meeting other developers and potential users.

Before heading to Preapps, brainstorm the following:
The App name
App description
Category
Price
Device
Icon
Screenshots
Release date

6. Have a Support Desk!
Even if you haven’t launched your app yet, you should prepare a help desk, especially if (when) you launch a beta version. What is a better way to deal with app bugs? A communication channel with your users is also useful for gathering emails and suggestions, not only for solving (potential) problems.
Try out Helpshift, a mobile customer support tool that has a review option included.

Hope our tips will help you prepare for your big app launch!

Prior to market a mobile app, you should form a general promotion strategy. It means that all steps you made for making your app popular need to be through before the app launch. You can go for two ways:
1) Focus on free promotional tactics first;
2) Use free methods of advertising to get desired traffic faster.

Essential free promotion activities are:

  • App Store Optimization (ASO) for ensuring a high rank of your app in the app stores. Use services as SensorTower, ASOdesk, etc which help to create the title and description with relevant keywords.
  • Make the app more attractive for potential users. Prepare informing screenshots and make an eye-catching logo for draw attention of a large number of people.
  • Pitch bloggers and journalist who are specialised on writing app reviews. You can also try to write press release and reach journalists who will be interested in your app and promote it among their readers. In order to make this process more effective I advise you to read a book “Pitch Perfect: The Art of Promoting Your App on the Web”. It is written by journalists Steve Sande and Erica Sadun who have worked on mobile app reviews for many years.
  • Use Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other popular social media in your region. Make pages dedicated to your app and join groups for posting information about the app, sharing links to it in App Store.

When you performed steps mentioned above, you are ready to start a paid promotional campaign. The most common method to get traffic quickly is through paid CPI advertising (you will pay only for real users who have downloaded your app) and acquire non-incentivized mobile traffic (real users who have made own decision to download the app based on the topic of that app or they have just liked the ad banner or a video).

I work for Clickky, a CPI self-serve platform for user acquisition and mobile monetization tailored to the needs of app developers, agencies and networks.

Working with us, you’ll be able to:

  • start small as we allow to spend only $100 for a mobile ad campaign
  • analyze the cheapest and most expensive countries and OS to advertise in due to CPI prediction tool – we show you the average install price for every region selected in the real time
  • to get access to real-time statistics of your ad campaign
  • to optimize your mobile CPI campaigns according to performance
  • to blacklist traffic sources that bring smaller Retention Rate

They are not talking for free on FB. I think they are talking about FB ads which are very effective.

However free promotion on FB means

  • Create a page of your app and find people to engage in.
  • Spread posts about your app through your page and through your friends' likes, shares, comments
  • Join available groups where you can promote your app.

There are also some review exchange groups but I don't use them and I don't suggest.
